ANITA'S STORY
I am undoubtedly a non-traditional college student. I am a 28 year old minority, single mother,
whose parents did not even graduate from high school. In fact, I’m the first one in my family, both
immediate and extended, to go to college. Although my family provides emotional support for my son
and myself, I manage all household and school expenses independently. SPSF/BC ensures my success in
that they help me define my educational goals, provide me with financial support and guidance, and
allow me to obtain personal counseling, and most importantly, believe in myself to graduate from a
four year college.
Everyday I strive to teach my son the importance of setting and achieving goals, while instilling
in him the value of education. His inquisitive eyes watch me go to school, work, do homework, and
maintain the household single-handedly. The additional financial support from this scholarship
allows to me accomplish my educational and professional goals, helps me provide better opportunities
for my child, and enables me to actively contribute to this community that has given me so much.
