SPSF/BC History
Founded in 1984 under the leadership of Marjorie
Marugg-Wolfe, career coordinator at Northwest Vocational Technical School; Wallace Smith,
Director of the Office of Human Concern, Rogers; and Marjorie Dole, career coordinator,
Adult Development Center, Bentonville
a course was set to enable single parents to attain self-sufficiency through post-secondary education.
The three were responding to a 1983 study by the Washington County Economic Opportunity Agency,
which indicated the need for scholarships for low-income families. Seven $150 scholarships were
awarded in the spring of 1984 with a budget of $5,000 for the year.
From 1984 to 1998, SPSF/BC
operated with only volunteers in the Office of Human Concern in Rogers. In December
1998, the organization received its own 501(c)3 identification number and hired
professional staff to expand the program. At that time, SPSF/BC
was able to secure office space at the United Way of Benton County.
SPSF/BC is excited to announce that as of May 2008, we have moved out of United Way and into our very own building! Our new facility
is providing us with a place for student interviews, career counseling, new student
orientations and other SPSF/BC events. Our new building is located at 2601
SW "D" St in Bentonville, AR.
